Digital pathology- transforming diagnosis in digital age
Dr. Majida Almemari
Digital pathology involves utilizing digital imaging technology in the practice of pathology. Its adoption is rapidly approaching standardization within the field. Various methods, such as static images, live streaming, and whole slide imaging (WSI), have been employed, with WSI enabling the digitization of entire glass slides, liberating pathology from traditional microscope reliance. Digital images offer numerous clinical benefits, including direct pathology diagnoses, telepathology, archiving, and image analysis, as well as nonclinical applications like proficiency testing, research, and education. Despite barriers such as technological constraints, regulatory hurdles, equipment costs, implementation challenges, and pathologist reluctance, digital pathology is increasingly recognized as integral to the future of pathology practice.
